On Monday May 2nd, West Goshen Township hosted a basic chainsaw safety class sponsored by Delaware Valley Trust. The Streets & Parks departments attended along with Whitemarsh and New Garden Townships. Operating chainsaws in normal conditions is one of the most dangerous jobs anyone can undertake. Now, throw in fallen trees on streets during ice storms, hurricanes and mix in some traffic, you have a serious situation on your hands.
There was 4-hour indoor classroom work followed by a few hours outside doing some hands-on tree work and take down techniques, the attendees learned the following:
Basic chainsaw maintenance
Safety requirements
Site preparation & PPE
Chainsaw startup techniques
Chainsaw operation & best practices
Post operation instruction
Proper takedown techniques
