This year Chester County became the first county in Southeastern Pennsylvania to introduce Smart911, a free service that allows individuals and families to create a safety profile online which provides key information to Chester County’s 9-1-1 Center. According to Chester County Commissioners’ Chair Michelle Kichline, “The Smart911 platform provides tools that save critical time in an emergency, when mere seconds can make a big difference. The additional information helps the 9-1-1 call takers know exact locations and what assistance is needed, often at a time when the person calling 9-1-1 may not be able to communicate those details.” West Goshen residents can set up Smart911 profiles by visiting www.smart911.com and entering in important emergency information such as medical conditions, pets in the home, emergency contacts, home and work addresses associated with an individual’s cellphone, and more. Residents can customize their profile and share any information they want the 9-1-1 call taker and response teams to have in the event of an emergency.
How Does Smart911 Work?
Smart911 allows citizens to provide the additional details that 9-1-1 call takers may need in order to assist them during an emergency. When you dial 9-1-1 today the information received by the 9-1-1 call center can be limited based on the type of phone you are calling on. With Smart911, anytime you make an emergency call from a phone registered with your Safety Profile, the 9-1-1 systems recognizes your phone number and automatically displays your profile on the screen of the call taker who receives your call.
At a time when you may be panicked, or unable to communicate, or it could be unsafe to communicate, Smart911 ensures that the details you would need to tell 9-1-1 are immediately available in the event you cannot verbally provide them. Smart911 is free, private and secure.
Why should I use Smart911?
Smart911 can help protect you, your loved ones, and other members of your household. By creating a Safety Profile with Smart911 during a calm moment, you can take the time to ensure that the information is correct and accurate and exactly what you would like to be communicated to emergency response teams in an emergency. Smart911 is free to all citizens.
How can I control who sees my Smart911 information?
Your Safety Profile will only be displayed to a 9-1-1 call taker if you place a 9-1-1 call from a phone confirmed with your Smart911 account, and the 9-1-1 center receiving your call participates in the Smart911 program. You are in full control of the information you enter and the phone numbers you choose to associate with your Safety Profile.
Chester County also subscribes to Smart911’s advanced Emergency Management system, which allows users to make information within their profile available to Emergency Management Agencies in the event of an emergency. This allows these agencies to search for individuals in need based on criteria in their profile. For example: individuals relying on electricity for medical needs or those who need assistance evacuating in a natural disaster.
If you enter your West Goshen address, you will be asked if you wish to participate in this program. Your participation helps your local Emergency Management services better prepare for and respond to emergencies.
You can change your sharing preferences and Smart911 Safety Profile content at any time by logging into your Smart911 account and clicking on settings.
Is my information kept private?
Yes. Your privacy is important to us. Your information is made available ONLY to 9-1-1 call takers and responders ONLY in the event you call 9-1-1
Is my information secure?
Smart911 utilizes the highest standards in physical and computer security technologies and conducts regular audits to ensure all information held in Smart911 is kept secure, and only made available to 9-1-1 and emergency responders who are responding to or planning for emergencies.
Smart911’s lifesaving service has been recognized by thousands of trusted sources across the county, is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and secured by SSL and Norton.
What if I have an emergency outside of Chester County?
Once a Smart911 profile is created, it can appear in any 9-1-1 center throughout the nation that uses the system. So if a resident of Chester County is involved in an emergency situation in another municipality that uses Smart911, the safety profile information will appear on the 9-1-1 call taker’s screen when the emergency call is made from a phone registered with Smart911.
